Level (TRL)

| TRL 1 | Basic Principles Observed | Basic scientific principles are identified and observed. |
| TRL 2 | Technology Concept Formulated | The basic concept and potential application of the technology are defined. |
| TRL 3 | Experimental Proof of Concept | Critical functions are demonstrated through experiments or initial proof-of-concept studies. |
| TRL 4 | Technology Validated in Laboratory | Components or systems are integrated and validated in a controlled laboratory environment. |
| TRL 5 | Technology Validated in Relevant Environment | The technology is tested and validated under conditions representative of the intended application. |
| TRL 6 | Technology Demonstrated in Relevant Environment | A representative prototype or system is demonstrated in a relevant environment. |
